Wednesday 9 April 2014

Last month, research from Park Associates revealed that 37 per cent of 18-24 year olds prefer to watch online content than linear TV. The analyst firm also found that over 50 per cent of U.S. households are now using paid OTT video services.  Read more...

The cloud holds sky-high potential for operators

Thursday 6 March 2014

Standardization has been the consumer electronics industry’s Achilles’ heel for some time. While today’s mobile devices tend to fall into one of two camps (Android and iOS) neither smart TVs nor set-top boxes offer the same level of consistency. With operators pushing their own range of equipment and smart TV manufacturers struggling to gain a foothold due to the range of competing systems already on the market, it’s no surprise that app developers have not traditionally been drawn to the TV platform in the same way they are to mobile. Read more...

CES 2014: kick-starting the connected experience

Tuesday 21 January 2014

More than 150,000 vendors, buyers, reporters and gadget fans descended on Las Vegas earlier this month for CES, and Philips uWand was right there with them. This year, the focus had shifted from Ultra HD and 4K broadcasts to connected devices, which came as no surprise – the buzz around internet-enabled technology has been growing steadily since IBC last September. Now, after this year’s show, connected devices are hotter than ever before. Read more...

Where do operators fit in a world of cloud-based content?

Friday 18 October 2013

Content has moved to the cloud and now presents a double-edged sword for operators. On the one hand, internet-based delivery has greatly reduced distribution costs, but on the other, it’s widened content availability. Consumers are no longer tied to an operator’s STB or pay-TV service to watch video on-demand. Instead, they can access this content on whatever platform they like, completely avoiding an operator’s solution if they so wish. Read more...

Wednesday 14 August 2013

The idea of bringing the internet to the living room has been around for over a decade. WebTV started this movement in the 90s, and Smart TV is seen by many to be the end result. But, in reality, the internet-enabled TV revolution we’ve all been waiting for still hasn’t materialised. The Smart TV platform is not the disruptive force it was promised to be, partly because the living room environment has become heavily crowded. Read more...

The growth of the TV app market

Friday 9 August 2013

Last month, Next Market Insights predicted that the TV app market will rise to a value of $14 Billion by 2017. Considering it was worth a fraction of that (just $1.03 Billion) in 2010, this is an extremely positive sign for the future of the industry and goes to demonstrate just how much the Smart TV market has changed since the start of the decade. Read more...

The face of Smart TV: voice, gesture and app-based navigation

Wednesday 10 July 2013

Today’s consumers have fully embraced touch screens. Smartphones, tablets and even laptops are now designed with this technology built in. Yet while a touch screen interface is ideal for portable and personal devices, it is not suitable for every platform.  Read more...

Forget broadcasting, narrowcasting is the future

Friday 14 June 2013

The realms of internet and television have collided. Today’s consumers are turned off by linear content schedules. They don’t like having their viewing habits dictated to them. It’s no surprise, then, that on-demand services are capturing their attention in a big way, allowing them to choose precisely what they want to watch, when they want to watch it, and in what order. This is narrowcasting, and it’s the future of TV. Read more...
